The Toyota Health Care Story
-
Ford Brewer, the medical director for Toyota North American Health Care, describes what he needed to do to fund the development of the new Toyota Medical Clinic in San Antonio. “Since this expenditure was close to $9 million, I had to travel to Japan to justify it.” Toyota's senior executives were not enamored with spending that kind of money on a health care clinic. At the same time, they also understood that healthcare costs were an important factor in the profitability decline of the Big Three U.s. automakers. In fact, Toyota officials had decided to build a new production facility in Canada due to the high cost of U.S. health care.
Collaborative Care
-
Since February 2007, ThedaCare has used its propriety care model — Collaborative Care — to change the way inpatient hospital care is delivered to patients. Collaborative Care has not only improved care and lowered costs; it has also led to higher satisfaction rates among patients and staff members.
Carol Inc.
-
Carol Inc. in Minneapolis is working to help lower costs and improve care through the creation of a medical mall that allows employers and workers to go to a website and search for “care packages” for certain conditions and what the provider would charge for treatment to help when deciding where to seek care.

Miller Electric
-
For many businesses and their employees, healthcare costs are spiraling out of control. Since 2000, family insurance premiums have increased by 73 percent, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.
Faced with numbers like that, Mike Weller, president of Miller Electric Mfg. Co. in Appleton, Wis., knew something had to be done. So the welding equipment manufacturer partnered with ThedaCare Inc., an integrated health system serving northeast Wisconsin, to develop a plan to improve employee health and, as a result, lower costs.
The plan featured several initiatives designed to improve workers' health and included not only health risk assessments and on-site health coaching, but also an onsite nurse and physician.
“Miller's investment in improving their employees' health has paid off. For every $1 spent on having an onsite nurse and doctor, the return on investment has been $1.48 and once you factor in worker productivity, that ROI increases to $2.52,” said Sandy Panzer, vice president of Ingenuity First, a division of ThedaCare.

The Ambulatory ICU
With businesses spending more and more each year on healthcare, there are growing calls to bring costs under control. One way to lower costs is to improve employee health. A coalition of businesses recently approached ThedaCare, an integrated health system in northeast Wisconsin, to develop a plan that would improve worker health and lower overall costs. One way to do this would be to target employees with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or coronary artery disease, who account for the majority of the healthcare costs. The business coalition and ThedaCare formed a unique team that developed the concept of an Ambulatory Intensive Care Unit (A-ICU) to help these employees improve their health and save the companies millions on health costs.
